Finding the Right POS System for Your Business

What is a POS System?

When your business requires a way to accept card payments at a physical location, then you need a reliable point of sale (POS) system. There are many different types of POS systems and brands to choose from, so understanding "what is a POS system" and finding the best one for your company can be tough. Every system claims to be superior, but that's not always the case when you look at a point of sale software comparison.

Many of the popular POS system names are trying to serve the majority of companies based on the most popular needs within industry best practices. A lot of these systems can start failing if a business's needs steer away from the norm. Here is our point of sale software comparison.

Drupal POS

When you own a medium to large company with distinct business needs, then a Drupal POS may be the best platform for you to use. This would be a great point of sale software option for a retail store. For those with smaller businesses, Drupal Commerce and Drupal POS may not be right for you.

The startup costs for website creation may be too high within this budget size, but when you review the long term monthly fees from other vendors, the initial costs will be made back over time. When you have an extremely specific need that other platforms aren't accommodating, Drupal Commerce often has these businesses covered.

If you are already running a Drupal Commerce store and are looking to add a point of sale system to physical locations, then picking Drupal POS would be a no-brainer. It is built over the existing Commerce design, so you can be confident it'll integrate the right way in every aspect. You can utilize your current web development service provider in order to find assistance in setting it up.

Shopify POS

For those small to medium sized businesses that are just starting out without a very large budget, Shopify and Shopify POS would most likely be the best choice. If you already have a Shopify website and you're happy with it, then Shopify POS would probably be perfect for your situation.

For those with a growing business, or anyone who is running large, enterprise-level companies, Shopify and Shopify POS most likely will not be adequate. The fees alone for these types of companies can be considerable.

If your company is at this level, moving to a platform such as Drupal Commerce would allow you to recuperate a lot of lost profits and provide you with total control over your developmental pathway with no limitations.

Square POS

Square POS is an excellent point of sale software for any small business. It is a low-cost, easy to use alternative that does not really call for more than just your phone and the associated card reader. The software interface is sleek and user-friendly.

For medium to large businesses—or those of you with very high traffic—using the Square POS may not be right for you. This is fundamentally an add-on service for existing companies, so don’t expect much from the perspective of eCommerce.
